Kyle says that they should change offensive mascots and I agree because if you think about mascots, they range from animals, to planes, to vehicles, to insects, to people of different races, don't you think that they should leave people out of the mascot conversation. Therefore, I am believe that they should leave people out of being a central mascot of a school district or team.

They say that if school mascots have very rich history they should be able to be kept but I say that just because a mascot has rich history doesn't mean it needs to be kept because if someone has a mascot of an Arab or let's say something for the Middle East or so they can be associated with terrorists and the attacks of September 11 and then during the Gulf War the logo would seem like they were anti-American. Someplace like the Middle East can also be associated with oil barons, landmines, and in American movies or theater especially, bad guys or antagonists. Therefore, I believe that history shouldn't make a mascot, some other very good reasoning should make a mascot like let's say a town should vote on a mascot or just do one that is intimidating if you can't do a vote.

Olivia says that mascots do not mock Native Americans but I say that they do sometimes mock Native Americans because Abel Cooper, Native American says, “That girl doesn't understand that every feather in the headdress symbolizes peoples whose lives were taken, it was making a mockery of us.” Therefore, I am lead to believe that mascots can disrupt a cultures peace by making a mockery of it.

They say that you should not change mascots but I say that they should change the mascots because they are offensive because ”When you look at sports teams, you see a lot of animals and Native Americans,” said Cooper, “We’re tired of being a part of that category anymore.” Mr. Cooper stated later in the passage “If one person, if one child, is offended, we need to put a stop to it." Therefore I believe that if one or two people are offended it needs to be changed.

Riley says that they should keep mascots if only 1 or 2 people dislike the mascot, but I think that if 1 or 2 people dislike the mascot it is a big deal because let's say that a very wealthy booster that helps the school out a lot says, I don't like that mascot it reflects the way I live in a bad way, I think I will stop giving money to help the school. The school loses a lot of money from the one or two people not giving them money, and to a small school district that is a lot if the person gives a lot of money. Therefor, I think that schools need nobody to dislike the mascot to keep the profits up.

I say that they should change controversial mascots because Abed Ayoub, Legal and policy director for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee says that he has worked nearly 10 years in civil rights and has never seen a more outstandingly bad case of stereotyping. “And what makes it worse is that it is coming from a school district,” he said. They’re supposed to be teaching kids to respect all the other cultures.” Therefore, I believe that they should change the mascots that are racist to a none racist and to a mascot that does not represent a persons race.
