School Mascots

Some people dislike their heritage being used as a team or school mascot.  Should the school/team be expected to change their mascot?

20rvanstrate said that school mascots aren't mean or racist to the race it represents, but I think it is being mean and racist against the race. Because no other race being a mascot, the reason why is because of people like Andrew Jackson, who was one of the worst enemies of the Native people, and by far the most brutal president towards Native people, collected the noses of every Indian he killed and encouraged the practice of skinning. Therefore mascot are used as a way of racism.

They say that we shouldn't change mascots, but I say we should because it is criticizing that culture, for an example, Abel Cooper remembers taking his daughter to a high school football game once and watching as a cheerleader came running onto the field wearing what looked like a Native American

headdress and buckskin clothing. The opposing team called themselves the Warriors and the teenage girl flipped around and did cartwheels for the entertainment of the fans in the stands. Mr. Cooper, a full-blooded American Indian, said his daughter became so offended, her eyes filled with tears and she asked if they could leave. Therefore people wont be offended by controversial mascots.

They say school mascots shouldn't be changed, but I think school mascots should be changed because children can be harmed.

Once the stereotype is established in a student's mind, it makes it very difficult for children of any race to learn about present day Native Americans.

Therefore, I think that school mascots should be changed.

Tyler says that they should change the mascot because it harms kids, but I say it shouldn't be changed because if schools get rid of Native American mascots, and add in a different one, it may make kids not even think about Native Americans. In school, teachers can teach students about their culture so they can learn to respect them and be proud to have that as their mascot. Therefor, it shouldn't be changed so that kids can learn to respect Native Americans in their school or community.

20mhermes say that Native Americans will be forgotten if mascots were removed, but I think mascot just bring unwanted racism. Because if it wasn't for Native Americans America would have never been explored. "Because virtually the only image that nonnative children view of Native people are of the mascots, most children assume that Native people are dead or were warlike people." -STAR. Therefore Native American mascots will only make things worse

I say that American Indian school mascots should be changed because Abel Cooper says that he was at a high school football game with his daughter, and when he and his daughter saw the cheerleaders dressed in buckskin clothing and feathered headdresses. His daughter wanted to go home because she was so offened. Each feather stands for a life that was taken in battle, and these people don't know that. Therefor, school mascots should be changed since it is so offending for the way the act and dress like the American Indians.

They say that naming mascots after races or even referencing races is just in spirit not in vain, but No other races than the “Redskins” were named as a mascot or team, because no other races were hunted or had bounties on them. Therefore making race themed mascots could lead to that races or even other races to retaliate.

20rvanstrate says that mascots shouldn't be change because only one or two people are upset, but I say it should be changed, because Native american children have been pulled out of school because people called them names like “Redskin and Red Boy." Therefore mascots based off of races or even religion would lead to much more racism then they already is.

I say that schools should not have offensive native american mascots, because according to Abel Cooper a full-blooded native american man. When he took his daughter to a high school football game and while watching a cheerleader came running out onto the field wearing what looked like a Native American headdress and buckskin clothing. Mr. Cooper said his daughter became so offended, her eyes filled with tears and she asked if they could leave. Therefore, all schools should have a non-offensive mascot that can bring happiness to not most but all of the students and parents.

I say that they should change controversial mascots because Abed Ayoub, Legal and policy director for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee says that he has worked nearly 10 years in civil rights and has never seen a more outstandingly bad case of stereotyping. “And what makes it worse is that it is coming from a school district,” he said. They’re supposed to be teaching kids to respect all the other cultures.” Therefore, I believe that they should change the mascots that are racist to a none racist and to a mascot that does not represent a persons race.

Connor says that schools should not have Native American and other hurtful school mascots. But I say that schools should be able to keep their mascots the way they are, because of the fact that very few people are offended of the teams name. I also believe that schools shouldn't change their mascots name because of all the background behind it, one simple change can result on a whole schools history being taken away. Therefore, all mascots "mean" or "not mean" depending on their background should be kept the same and left alone.

20cpendleton says that mascot sometimes mock native Americans, but I think otherwise. Because Mascot offend more than just the people who talk up, think about it there is more people out there to scared to share how offended they are. "If we must show respect to all other groups, why should we be permitted to dismiss political correctness when it applies to Native people?" -STAR - Students and Teachers Against Racism. If we have to respect other races why disrespect native Americans?

They say that we should keep the same mascots and not change them, but I say we should change controversial mascots because Washington's football team the Redskins, makes a hostile environment for Native American kids. Stegman is associate director of the Half in Ten Education Fund at the progressive Center for American Progress. Previously, he served as majority staff counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. He and Victoria Phillips, a professor at American University Washington College of Law, argue in a report published Tuesday that derogatory team names create an "unwelcome and hostile learning environment" for Native students that "directly results in lower self-esteem and mental health" for these adolescents and young adults. Therefore if you do change the mascots name and logo you will have kids and young adults that are Native Americans and they will feel safer.

They say that mascot shouldn't be changed but I say they should because, Some logo are not meant to be offensive but to some people they are. Therefore I think they should be changed.

They say that mascot should be changed but I say they shouldn't because even tho you don't mean to be offensive theres always a chance for stereotyping. Therefore better to be safe than have the chance to hurt someone.

I think that people should change offensive mascots because the highest suicide rate in the U.S. are Native-Americans this is because of the mascots and how they look and act during the games. Therefore offensive mascots should be dropped and the names too.

They say that you should not change mascots but I say that they should change the mascots because they are offensive because ”When you look at sports teams, you see a lot of animals and Native Americans,” said Cooper, “We’re tired of being a part of that category anymore.” Mr. Cooper stated later in the passage “If one person, if one child, is offended, we need to put a stop to it." Therefore I believe that if one or two people are offended it needs to be changed.

They say that if school mascots have very rich history they should be able to be kept but I say that just because a mascot has rich history doesn't mean it needs to be kept because if someone has a mascot of an Arab or let's say something for the Middle East or so they can be associated with terrorists and the attacks of September 11 and then during the Gulf War the logo would seem like they were anti-American. Someplace like the Middle East can also be associated with oil barons, landmines, and in American movies or theater especially, bad guys or antagonists. Therefore, I believe that history shouldn't make a mascot, some other very good reasoning should make a mascot like let's say a town should vote on a mascot or just do one that is intimidating if you can't do a vote.

Kyle says that they should change offensive mascots and I agree because if you think about mascots, they range from animals, to planes, to vehicles, to insects, to people of different races, don't you think that they should leave people out of the mascot conversation. Therefore, I am believe that they should leave people out of being a central mascot of a school district or team.

Kyle say that people can get offended but I think if Saudi Arabia is no longer under french rule so, Saudi Arabians no longer wore the fez on their headdress. So I think this high school didn’t think it would affect anyone because they don't even wear them anymore. Therefore I think that people like Mr. Cooper's daughter who was offended by the girl that come out looking like a something of a race.

They say that we should change mascots but I say we shouldn't because a lot of people think it is a honor to have a mascot named after their tribe or name. For example Even some Native American groups view mascots as a source of pride. Florida State University kept its Seminoles nickname after receiving support from the Seminoles tribes. Therefore people will have more pride in the mascots than feeling offensive.

Madelyn says that we should change controversial mascots but I say we shouldn't because Native American mascots in general are not naturally offensive. A Native American mascot doesn't "mock" Native Americans any more than a tiger mascot "mocks" animals; any more than a Trojan mascot "mocks" the culture of Ancient Greece; any more than a hoosier mascot "mocks" those from Indiana. Therefore if we change one mascot, other people are going to get offended by other mascots, so we would have to change more than just Native American mascots.

They say school mascots should be changed, but I say they shouldn't be changed because the Arab mascot has evolved over the years as have many others. In 1920, the mascot was a turbaned Arab on a horseback carrying a lance. In 1950, they had a young holding a scimitar and an old man with a growling face and golden tooth. Therefore, the mascot is much better than it was 90 years ago, and Native Americans should at least be happy about that.

Olivia says that they should change controversial mascots. But I say that they should keep them the way they are, because of the history behind their name. I also believe that they should keep them the way they are because many people take it as pride, being able to call yourself the name of a sports/school team. Therefore, more of the people will be happy, the school doesn't change their history/background and many people can wear the pride of having their teachings be the name of a sports/school team.

Kyle says that offensive native american mascots should be changed and I agree with that, except for the fact that it is extremely difficult to change a mascot. You can't just tell everyone to stop calling you the redskins, or the Arabs, you have to replace almost anything that even has that team name on it. For an example Marquette university's mascot was ounce the warriors; yet they received a lot of public harassment to change it even though it was not even an offensive name.

They had to replace all of their teams uniforms, change the center court symbol, along with a dozen other things that had to be thrown out and replaced because they were "racist" costing the school thousands and thousands of dollars. This probably isn't to bad for a big school like Marquette but imagine how hard it would be for a small high school.

Therefore I think that some organisations should not be so quick to force a school into changing there name unless there is a significant problem with racism.

They say that mascots shouldn't be changed, but I say that they should because Native Americans, and kids who are Native Americans feel like they are being made fun of and don't want to talk about their culture, but if they don't have a Native American as their mascot, they could be more open about their culture. Therefore kids can feel more comfterable talking about who they are and not feel like they are being made fun of.

Jack says that Mr, Cooper's daughter was so offended but, David Hinkle graduated from this high school and was proud to have gone to this high school because he was a proud Arab. Also he said that its not indented to be offensives and that it has been like this for 50-60 years. Therefore school are not doing this to purposely hurt someone.

They say we should change the mascots but I say, no because "most of these schools have had this mascot for over 50-60" years says David Hinkle. Therefore schools should not have to only because of 1 person.

They say that school mascots should be changed, but I say that they shouldn't because so many people probably have shirts with the school name, and if they change it, it's like it's not really their school anymore. Also the mascot is probably in the center of the gym floor and on uniforms, and that would be a lot of money to order new wood and uniforms for the students. Therefor it would be an unnecessary waste of time any money to order all new stuff.

Riley says that they should keep mascots if only 1 or 2 people dislike the mascot, but I think that if 1 or 2 people dislike the mascot it is a big deal because let's say that a very wealthy booster that helps the school out a lot says, I don't like that mascot it reflects the way I live in a bad way, I think I will stop giving money to help the school. The school loses a lot of money from the one or two people not giving them money, and to a small school district that is a lot if the person gives a lot of money. Therefor, I think that schools need nobody to dislike the mascot to keep the profits up.

Riley said that these schools are not meaning to be offensive they are just doing this because there is either a reason or background but I say that we should change mascots because Abed Ayoub, legal and policy director for the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC). He insists that the school's mascot and other "offensive" imagery — including its use of harem girls in marching band parades and a belly dancer half-time show — are classic examples of Orientalism,a term coined by late scholar Edward Said to describe Western depictions of Middle Eastern, North African and Asian societies as backward and inferior. Ayoub said that in nearly 10 years of working in civil rights he has never encountered a more egregious case of stereotyping. "And what makes it worse is that it's coming from a school district," Therefore if we change it, there will be no criticizing or stereotyping that culture.
